Affiliate fraud on Shopify: the types and how to prevent it

June 5, 2026 · 5 min read

An affiliate program pays out money, so it attracts a little gaming. Most of it is preventable with a few automatic checks. Here are the common types and how to stop them.

Self-referrals

An affiliate buys through their own link to earn a commission (effectively a self-discount). Detect it by matching the order's email to the affiliate's, and suppress the commission automatically.

Disposable-inbox / fake-account farming

Throwaway email addresses used to create fake affiliates or fake orders. Screen against known disposable-inbox domains and withhold commission on suspicious signups.

Leaked coupon codes

Affiliate codes posted to coupon-aggregator sites get used by shoppers the affiliate never influenced. Flag — or withhold commission on — discount-code orders that arrive with no tracked referral click.

How Override blocks it

  • Built-in fraud guard: self-referral and disposable-inbox detection suppress commission automatically.
  • CouponLeak Guard: flags or enforces against leaked-code orders.
  • Compliance by design: sales-only commissions, no buy-ins, bounded tiers — so the whole program is honest by default.
